This is continuing on from Installing Nokia CK 100 Car Kit in Subaru MY09 Forester XT Part 1 I've split this in to two articles to hopefully make it easier to follow. After building the wiring harness in part1, now I need to remove the headunit from the dash of the Forester. According to the Service Manual it says to begin removing the headunit surround by inserting plastic tool in the slots under the center air conditioning vents. I tried this, but I was too worried about marking the dash, and in such a visible location. Perhaps the tool I used was too large. So I decided to remove the silver/grey insert across the dash and get to the headunit that way. To do this, I removed the left hand/passenger side cover, then a screw holding the insert in place. I then moved to the right hand/drivers side panel. Followed by the panel that runs along under the steering column. Note the thin black wire running down near the door seal, this is the car kits mic wire. I mounted this up on the front pillar, and then hid the wire down behind the pillar cover panel. The wire is then thread along under the dash to just below where the headunit sits. Be very careful not to place this wire where it could interfere with the steering wheel height adjustment. Next carefully unplug the air conditioner temp sensor. This image just shows the other connectors I removed from the panel along under the steering column. Next I removed the screw on the right hand/drivers side holding the silver/grey panel in place. This screw was revealed when I removed the panel that runs along under the steering column in a previous step. This then allowed me to carefully prise up the silver panel under the climate controls using a thin panel-pulling tool. The silver/grey panel doee not need to be removed fully, it just needs to be moved enough to provide a gap under the air vents. You can see the three tounges that are holding the headunit surround in place. These are the three locations mentioned in the service manual to use a plastic panel tool on. Now I could carefully prise the headunit surround off, there are no screws involved in this. This step is basically the only step in the service manual, but as I said earlier I couldn't get the surround off without fear of scratching it below the air vents. The headunit can now be removed via four screws holding it in place. ![]() I wrapped the CK-100 in some soft open-cell foam, and placed it under the headunit as I re-inserted the headunit. After connecting the harness between the headunit, the cars harness and the CK-100. This foam will help keep it in place and prevent rattles. |
